Returned to work after taking my birthday off to discover this on my computer monitor.

(They are all faces of celebrities and notable people who have the same birthday as me...)

#241 - busy subway platform

The subways started running again at 5:00 am.

They warned us to expect delays and more crowded train. This was the platform this morning.

#240 - afterward

After the storm had passed this morning, my roommate and I went for a walk outside. There was little, if any damage, to be seen. Others in other areas weren't quite as lucky.

Adios Irene!

#239 - here she comes!

Irene is coming to New York City! This was my day today...

Here is a photo of the notice they put up on our apartment building yesterday. I snapped this when I went out this morning. There were quite a few people out, going grocery shopping and taking dogs for walks. It was really, really humid.

I went to the gym and watched Mayor Bloomberg's press conference there. He announced mandatory evacuations of New Jersey and other "Zone A" and "low-lying areas" and discussed the MTA closures.

After the gym I went to my bodega (corner store by my apartment) for a couple of things. Normally the longest line is only one or two people. Here's what I encountered. Notice the boxes of Poland Spring water. People were snatching them up as quickly as the guy could stock them on the shelves.

Then I went on a hunt for batteries. The one thing I forgot yesterday.
There were no batteries anywhere, of course. I tried CVS first.

"No really... We have no batteries."

Am spending time at home with my roommate tonight. We have a stack of movies, a bottle of wine, and books and internet connection. Should be an interesting night!

#238 - hurricane prep & boys of summer

The city is starting to freak out about Hurricane Irene. I went to Trader Joe's today after work to get some food and the line was almost out the door. The store is always busy and there is always a long line but that is the longest I've seen it. I took a photo but for some reason my phone was acting up and several photos I took today of hurricane "preparations" did not save. I took this one tonight in the subway station with my regular point-and-shoot.

MTA is shutting down at noon tomorrow.

Got out tonight and went to a Mets game. My friend got tickets at work and the seats were amazing. Front row behind home plate. Below is my favorite.

#217 - all the lonely people

This gentleman was playing "Eleanor Rigby" as I passed by this evening.

Where do they all belong?"
